This is probably one of my very favorite services that we do in the church, the footwashing service. There is something so humbling and yet, so powerful, that overtakes me as I kneel down to wash the feet of my sister in the Lord, a fellow saint of God, and I begin to serve her in this manner. Jesus taught us by His example. Knowing that death was not long off, He chose to wash the feet of His disciples, over any last thing He could have done with them, and He said to them, “If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.” John 13:14-15
I know that I am being obedient to the Word of God as I gently wash the tired and worn feet of my sister in the Lord, perhaps feet that have walked through some hard times, maybe were unsure of the next step to take as in the valley she trod, and those same feet that have rejoiced on the mountain top when God gave the victory. Feet that have danced and praised the Lord, in spite of their circumstances. Feet that have come and knelt at the altar when she didn’t know what to do. Feet that have walked many miles just to be in the house of God. Feet that have also walked with me on jungle trails or stood on mud floors taking the glorious Gospel to others. Oh, how precious are those feet and it is my HONOR to wash them!
